Birthday Wish: 2 ½ years to go – journey to US Senior Amateur Open

One of the special things about my Christmas time birthday is the gift of the days beginning to get longer. On the 23rd of December, we have reached the middle of Winter and Spring is just around the corner as is the beginning of the 2026 Golfweek and Senior Amateur tournament season.

And while I am formulating my 2026 season goals – my birthday, marks one year closer to age 55 and my age qualification for the USGA Senior Amateur Open in 2028. My goal to qualify and compete in this tournament is my BIG HAIRY GOAL for the next few years.

Perhaps you have just started following my journey and don’t have the context (available in my previous blogs 😉) to my original goal in all this: win a golf tournament. I completed this goal in 2023 with 3 wins on the Golfweek and Senior Amateur tours. And while there are plenty of other cool things I can do within Golfweek like win a regional or national championship – the US Senior Amateur Open offers a level of exclusivity and notoriety that only a few have attained.

Did I mention that I like difficult goals that consume lots of time and energy to achieve? I like to think of it as the “Top 2%” – what can I do that the top 2% have achieved? Here are some examples of my top 2%:

  • My business is 24 years old
  • My name is on a US Patent
  • I have run 4 marathons
  • Won multiple golf tournaments

As the blessing of golf has become deeply ingrained into my daily life, the prospect of chasing the Top 2% of all golfers at my age is very attractive to me. Breaking the 4.9 HI mark puts me in the 10% of all golfers. And while achieving scratch is absolutely on the list of challenges, seeing my name on a USGA trophy would be something pretty damn cool.

And why not? Why not me? All massive goals that are achieved start with that simple selfevaluation…do I have what it takes?

Beyond the next 2 and half years, we are going to find out. I started competing in golf very late in life and I will be battling others that have way more time on the course and experience than me. I know I am not ready now and that’s what I am preparing for in 2028 – to be ready. To give it a shot and probably chase this idea WELL beyond 2028.

My social media will be this story…of me preparing for the starting line of the next marathon. Hope you will tag along and maybe even join me for a few rounds!
